DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Serena Williams already firmly ensconced as the No. 1 player in the world, is looking at more all-time records after she picked up her 54th WTA title.
Williams didn't drop a set -- and only twice lost as many as four games in a set -- in winning her third Rogers Cup title Sunday in Toronto. She defeated Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-0 in the final.
Williams is 56-3 this year with eight championships. The $426,000 she picked up in the winner's check Sunday pushed her career winnings past the $47 million mark. That's $18.3 million more than her sister Venus Williams, who is second on the all-time WTA money list.
CHICAGO, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Three-time AL Most Valuable Player Alex Rodriguez said Monday he is appealing his suspension through the 2014 season for use of performance-enhancing drugs.
Rodriguez was among 13 players disciplined for involvement with the now-closed Biogenesis wellness clinic, but his punishment was the most severe. He hasn't played this season due to injury but was inserted into the New York Yankees lineup at third base for Monday's game in Chicago.
Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement Rodriguez' suspension would begin Thursday and cover the post-season in both 2013 and '14. The lengthy suspension was due to Rodriguez's "use and possession of numerous forms of prohibited performance-enhancing substances, including testosterone and human growth hormone, over the course of multiple years."
